Play Dough

Ingredients

225g / 8oz / 2 cups plain flour
115g / 4oz / 1 cup salt
2 tsp cream of tartar
2 tbsp oil
10 fl oz/ 0.5 pint / 2 cups water
Food colouring
Vanilla essence (fragrance)

Mixing bowl
Spoon
Heavy Saucepan

Measure out the dry ingredients into the mixing bowl and stir thoroughly.  Transfer into the saucepan with the oil, water, food colouring and vanilla and stir continuously over a low heat until a dough forms.  Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead while the mixture cools. Knead for about 5-10 minutes.  If the mixture is too dry, occasionally dampen your hands while kneading and if it is too sticky, dust with a little extra flour.

Store in a plastic container with an airtight lid.

I have made this in the past and it does last quite a while without going off.  If pieces are left out of the container, they go hard and brittle rather than mouldy.
